Your programme, your rules!
There are many different ways to get active. Your Local Coordinator is qualified to recommend activities that are most suitable to benefit you. Your Coordinator will work with you to find out your likes and dislikes over time so as you progress your programme becomes tailored specifically for you. Below are some examples of the 'activity sessions' that you may try as part of your programme. You will not be asked to do anything you don't want to do, remember, it's YOUR programme, so it's YOUR rules!
Gym Session: this can be made up of a combination of elements - cardiovascular exercise (for your heart and lungs), resistance exercise (for muscle strength and endurance) mobility exercise (for joint health and muscle flexibility) and core stability (for posture and back care). The gym is a good place to start as it provides a good opportunity to get used to monitoring how exercise makes you feel.
Home Based Activity; Is good as it gives you the flexibility to be active in your own home, and this may be more convenient for you and you could include activities such as cleaning, gardening, playing with your children or walking pets into your programme.
Active Travel; Walking or cycling part or all of your journey is a clever way to build in your sessions to everyday life. You would save money on bus fair or fuel too! By using stairs instead of lifts or escalators you will be increasing the amount you do.
Pool Session; If you are confident in the water then this is a good way of adding variation. Many facilities offer adult swimming classes or aqua aerobics. Pool activities are good for joint support a whole body cardiovascular work out.
Work Session; Use your breaks at work or your journey to and from work as an opportunity to get active. Getting colleagues to help you by getting active with you or encouraging you may work to – the average full time worker spends nearly 60% of their time with their colleagues each week.
Group Classes; A great way to socialise and get in a routine at the same time. Group walking clubs or studio sessions at your facility will help you get active with others – a great way to keep things interesting.
